- Free multiplayer Texas Hold'em with a Wild West map to progress through
- No real money: chips can't be cashed out
- 4.7 stars on the App Store, 4.3 on Google Play
- Cash games, Sit & Go, Spin & Play, heads-up and blackjack
Governor of Poker turns Texas Hold’em into a Wild West adventure. You start as a rookie, travel across a map of Texas, win poker games in saloons and casinos, and unlock bigger tables as your bankroll grows. It’s a free social poker app with more than 10 million downloads on Google Play, and like every app in this category, the chips are strictly virtual: you can’t win or withdraw real money.
Many players still know it as Governor of Poker 3. The series was created by the Dutch studio Youda Games, and the multiplayer edition arrived in 2016. Playtika, the company behind WSOP Poker, bought the Youda Games portfolio in 2023 and now publishes the app under the shorter name Governor of Poker.

What Governor of Poker actually is
At heart it’s online multiplayer Texas Hold’em against real players. What sets it apart is the framing. Instead of a plain lobby, you move through Wild West towns, each with its own stakes and tougher opponents. You collect hats, rings and pins to show off your status at the table, and you can join a team to take part in missions, challenges and PvP poker tournaments together.
Playtika states that the game is intended for players aged 21 and older, for amusement only, and that it doesn’t offer real-money gambling or real prizes based on gameplay. The App Store rates it 17+ for simulated gambling.
How to play Governor of Poker on your phone
Governor of Poker is a native app on both stores. You can install it on iPhone and iPad from the App Store (iOS 15 or later) and on Android from Google Play. It also runs on desktop via Steam, and the game is built for cross-platform play, so the same tables are shared between mobile and PC players.
- Download Governor of Poker from the App Store or Google Play
- Claim the welcome package with free chips, gold and an avatar hat
- Start at the low-stakes tables in the first town on the map
- Win chips to unlock new towns, bigger blinds and more formats
Free chips come in every few hours, and a bonus slot machine adds extra chips. Weekly and monthly missions and live events keep the rewards coming, so you can progress without paying, as long as you don’t burn through your stack at high-stakes tables too early.
Game modes and features
Governor of Poker offers more formats than most social poker apps:
- Cash games with No-Limit and Pot-Limit Hold’em
- Sit & Go tournaments
- Spin & Play, a quick-fire tournament format
- Heads Up Challenge for one-on-one poker
- Push or Fold with Royal Poker, a fast all-in-or-fold format
- Ultimate Poker, a take on Ultimate Texas Hold’em against the house
- Blackjack 21, Chuck A Luck dice and slots on the side
The mix of poker formats is a real plus. Heads-up and Sit & Go tables give you something closer to structured poker than the endless ring games you’ll find in many free apps, and the casino side games are there if you want a break from cards. Playtika says the app uses industry-standard RNG methods for its dealing.
The chip economy and in-app purchases
The app is free to download, but it sells chips, gold and other virtual items for real money. It also contains advertising. If you share your phone with family members, you can switch off in-app purchases in your device settings.
Chips have no cash value and can’t be cashed out or exchanged for prizes. Gold is a second in-game currency on top of chips. As with every social poker game, success here doesn’t mean you’ll win at real-money poker: players take bigger risks when the chips cost nothing, and the progression system rewards volume over careful play.
Mobile experience
The cartoon Wild West style is cheerful and easy to read on small screens. The iOS download is around 294 MB, lighter than many rivals. The map and progression make it easy to set goals for a short session, though the number of currencies, missions and offers can feel busy at first.
Ratings are among the best in social poker. Governor of Poker scores 4.7 stars from nearly 25,000 ratings on the App Store and 4.3 stars from about 393,000 reviews on Google Play. Players like the variety and the sense of progress. The most common complaints are about chip prices and the number of offers.
Who Governor of Poker is for
Governor of Poker suits players who like a goal beyond the next hand. The town-by-town map gives every session a target, the team features add a social layer without forcing you to chat, and the different formats let you switch from slow cash games to fast all-in tables when you only have a few minutes. If you just want to sit down and play a clean game of Hold’em with as few distractions as possible, the extra currencies and missions may feel like too much.
Governor of Poker compared with other free poker apps
If you want a polished, tournament-first experience with official branding, WSOP Poker is the obvious alternative. Zynga Poker has the biggest player pool of all, while Poker Face adds live video chat for home-game nights with friends. Governor of Poker stands out for its story-driven progression and the widest choice of formats.
Prefer real-money poker?
Governor of Poker is built for fun, so it can’t give you winnings you can withdraw. If that’s what you’re after, Ignition runs one of the best-known poker rooms for US players, with anonymous tables, Hold’em and Omaha cash games and a busy tournament schedule. Bovada offers poker on the same network. Neither has a downloadable poker app: both run in your phone’s browser, so there’s nothing to install. Check that real-money play is available where you live before you sign up.
