Quick answer

Ultimate Texas Hold'em is a casino version of Hold'em played heads-up against the dealer. You bet an Ante and Blind, then raise 3x or 4x before the flop, 2x after the flop or 1x on the river. The dealer needs a pair to qualify, and the Blind pays up to 500 to 1 for a royal flush. The house edge is about 2.2% of the Ante with correct strategy.

Key takeaways
  • Texas Hold'em heads-up against the dealer
  • One raise per hand: 4x preflop, 2x on the flop or 1x on the river
  • Blind bet pays up to 500 to 1
  • House edge about 2.2% of the Ante, roughly 0.5% of total action

Ultimate Texas Hold’em takes the world’s most popular poker game and turns it into a head-to-head battle with the dealer. What is Ultimate Texas Hold’em?

Ultimate Texas Hold’em was developed by Roger Snow at Shuffle Master, a company later acquired by Bally and now part of Light & Wonder. The game first ran on electronic multiplayer terminals before it moved to live tables, and it’s now a fixture in casinos across the US and online. It uses a single 52-card deck and the familiar Hold’em structure: two hole cards for you and the dealer, and five shared community cards.

The twist is in the betting. You get one chance to raise per hand, and the earlier you raise, the more you can bet.

Ultimate Texas Hold’em rules

  • Place equal Ante and Blind bets, plus an optional Trips bet
  • You and the dealer each get two hole cards
  • Before the flop: check, or raise 3x or 4x your Ante
  • After the flop: if you checked, check again or raise 2x
  • After the river: if you checked twice, raise 1x or fold
  • Once you’ve raised, you can’t raise again; the remaining cards are dealt
  • The dealer needs a pair or better to qualify; if not, your Ante pushes
  • If you beat the dealer, Play pays 1 to 1 and Ante pays 1 to 1 (when the dealer qualifies)

Blind and Trips bets

The Blind bet is where the big wins come from. If you beat the dealer with a straight or better, the Blind pays a bonus: 1 to 1 for a straight, 3 to 2 for a flush, 3 to 1 for a full house, 10 to 1 for four of a kind, 50 to 1 for a straight flush and 500 to 1 for a royal flush. With a lesser winning hand, the Blind pushes. If the dealer wins, you lose the Blind too.

Trips is an optional side bet that pays on three of a kind or better in your final hand, regardless of the dealer. Common pay tables include 3 to 1 for three of a kind, 40 to 1 for a straight flush and 50 to 1 for a royal flush. The house edge on Trips depends on the pay table.

Ultimate Texas Hold’em strategy

Good Ultimate Texas Hold’em strategy is all about timing your raise. The basics:

  • Raise 4x before the flop with any pair except 2s, any ace and strong kings or queens
  • Raise 2x after the flop with two pair or better, or a hidden pair
  • On the river, raise 1x with any pair or better that uses one of your hole cards; otherwise fold most weak hands
  • Don’t check good hands just to see more cards; the 4x raise is where your edge comes from
  • Skip Trips if you want the lowest house edge

An Ultimate Texas Hold’em strategy chart helps a lot during your first sessions, especially for the preflop raise, which is the most valuable decision in the game.

Ultimate Texas Hold’em house edge

With correct strategy, the house edge is about 2.2% of your Ante, which is roughly 0.5% of everything you bet over the course of a hand, because you often raise 4x. That makes it one of the better poker table games in the casino, as long as you play the raises correctly.

How to play Ultimate Texas Hold’em on your phone

There’s no standalone real-money Ultimate Texas Hold’em app in the App Store or Google Play. You play it inside a casino app or in your phone’s browser, either as a live dealer game or as an RNG table game:

  • Choose one of the casino apps below and sign up
  • Search the live casino or table games for Ultimate Texas Hold’em
  • Place your Ante and Blind (and Trips if you like)
  • Decide on your raise before the flop, after the flop or on the river

Evolution offers a live dealer version of Ultimate Texas Hold’em, so you can play with a real dealer on your phone. If you’d like to try the format for free first, Governor of Poker includes its own Ultimate Hold’em mode with virtual chips.

Where to play Ultimate Texas Hold’em online

You’ll find Ultimate Texas Hold’em at online casinos with an Evolution live casino or a large table game library. Jackpot City uses Evolution for its live games, and Bovada and Ignition are among the most popular real-money casino apps for US players. Below are the casino apps we recommend for Ultimate Texas Hold’em and other casino poker games.

Mobile experience

The game works well on a phone because every decision is a single tap: check, raise or fold. The community cards and your hand fit easily in portrait mode, and the live version streams the dealer above the betting area. A stable connection is important for the live game; RNG versions run smoothly on any connection.

Ultimate Texas Hold’em vs other casino poker games

If you want something even simpler, Three Card Poker has just one decision per hand. Pai Gow Poker is slower and has lots of pushes, and video poker lets you play poker against a machine with very low house edges.
